Silverstone is home to the Formula 1® British Grand Prix, but it also hosts many other high-speed events throughout the year. Having a reliable fleet is a must.
There are around 200 vehicles in the Silverstone fleet, mostly commercial vehicles including 4x4s, which can be multi-use or allocated to specific departmental roles. Vehicles are used for several purposes, from fire tenders to fast response ambulances, VIP transport, relocating temporary structures and support for on-site catering across its 600 acres. They also have a fleet of high performance cars including Aston Martins and Ferraris.
Maintenance of this diverse fleet is the responsibility of Jamie Nile, head of the onsite workshop. Key issues faced by Jamie & his team are safety, compliance & cost.
Safety is number one for obvious reasons. Vehicles travelling at very high speeds pose unique challenges for a maintenance operation. Vehicle defects, whether on racing vehicles or safety & support vehicles, have to be managed with total precision. There is no room for mistakes or missed defects. The consequences could be catastrophic.
With this in mind, Lee Thomas (pictured left), Finance, Procurement & Contracts manager, researched the market for a system that would deliver a number of key requirements:-
- An end-to-end defect management system, from inspection to completion
- Complete visibility over all aspects of the maintenance operation, including parts management.
- Ease of use; Workshop technicians had to be brought on board.
After an extensive search of the market, Silverstone settled on Assetminder. According to Jamie, “the initial thing that attracted us to Assetminder was it’s very intuitive and user-friendly interface. The screens were uncluttered and the mobile app for the technicians was so simple that 30 minutes training was all that was needed to get them up and running.”
Technicians now complete inspections and job cards on their tablets, using the camera to take photos of defects where required. Defects picked up during the inspection can be added to a job card on the same tablet for immediate attention. The completed repair automatically updates the vehicle history file.
With a diverse mix of vehicles going through their workshop doors, Silverstone complete up to ten different types of inspections. With the Assetminder inspection app, each inspection sheet is pre-configured and ready for use exactly as it is required, simplifying the process significantly.
Parts used on each job can now be captured on each job card, ensuring complete traceability and control. “The cost savings that can be achieved from this aspect alone will pay for the Assetminder system twice over” says Lee.
Assetminder has optimised our technicians’ time and increased our workshop efficiency.
The system has completely removed the need to file hard copy inspection sheets which has massively reduced administration time according to Jamie.
